National Reconciliation Week ( 27th May – 3rd of June)

May 27, 2018

National Reconciliation Week was initiated in 1996 by Reconciliation Australia to celebrate indigenous history and culture in Australia and foster reconciliation discussion and activities.

The Reconciliation movement is about building respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians to work together to close gaps and achieve a shared sense of fairness and justice.

In its broadest sense ‘reconciliation’ means coming together. In Australia it is the term used to refer to the bringing together of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, or Indigenous, and non-Indigenous Australians. Supporting reconciliation means working to overcome the reasons there is division and inequality between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
